1. When you have one in seven of the global population going hungry you know there’s a problem. When there’s just as many suffering from hidden hunger, the problem gets even deeper. Yet there is actually more than enough food to feed everyone on the planet.

2. Meigu
Much of China is now very wealthy. However, there are still some remote villages where the people living there are amongst the poorest people in the world. Ertuo Village in Meigu is one of these places.

3. In Ertuo Village 30% of the land is good for growing crops, 20% is forest and 50% is grass.

4. Three years ago 90% of the families in Ertuo village were living below the poverty line. They were living on around £23 a year.

5. Cooking meals in the village was difficult because the only energy source was wood. The Salvation Army have helped by building special bio gas tanks so the families can cook more easily.

6. It was also discovered that over 70% of the villagers couldn’t read or write. Only some of the children were able to go to school. It took them about an hour and a half to walk to the school.

7. The Salvation Army have helped them to build a new school.

8. It was difficult for families to earn money in the village.

9. The Salvation Army are helping the people who live in Ertuo village to earn money by raising animals. In 2009 they started an animal bank.

10. They bought 80 female goats and 8 male goats and gave them to 40 of the 117 families in Ertuo village.

11. The families were taught how to look after the goats and how to build special goat pens. When the female goats started to have baby goats they were able to give them to other families.

12. The people of Ertuo village can now look forward to the future.
