1 Problems with Foreign Powers
Challenges at home and overseas led the United States to declare war on Great Britain

2 Key Terms and Key People
USS Constitution Impressment Embargo Embargo Act of 1807 Non-Intercourse Act Battle of Tippecanoe Key People Tecumseh War Hawks James Madison

3 Give Peace a Chance Jefferson looks to make friends with foreign countries but avoid war The spread of trade and the expansion of the United States would cause trouble with other nations In North Africa, The Barbary Pirates would Attack Ships, Steal Cargo, Hold the Crews Captive The USS Constitution would be deployed to put an end to the Fighting

4 Clowns to the Left of me…Jokers to the right!
The US benefited from European Wars, gaining land and trade, but by 1805 Britain began to prevent American trade to enemies France also enacted partial blockades putting the US in the middle of the conflict Britain also used impressments to hurt US trade including an attack on the Chesapeake which led to the death of 3 Americans Jefferson would NOT declare war angering some Americans

5 Here I am…Stuck in the Middle with You
Jefferson sought to place an embargo on all foreign trade and passed the Embargo Act of 1807 which banned the US from all foreign ports and Closed American ports to Britain The Policy was a disaster and hurt the economy, especially farmers, merchants and Shippers When James Madison won the 1808 election the embargo laws had already been repealed and he replace them with the Non-Intercourse Act Madison tried to ban trade with BOTH France and Britain and their colonies, but that was also unsuccessful

6 United we Stand Americans became furious as Britain tried to Stir up trouble with Native Americans from Canada Tecumseh, A Shawnee Chief, vowed to stop the loss of land to American settlers and tried to unite the Native American Tribes into one group Tecumseh and his brother, The Prophet, Tried to Unite tribes in the NW Frontier, the South, And the Eastern Mississippi Valley

7 ONE LAST EFFORT OF PEACE
In 1810 Tecumseh and William Henry Harrison Met to discuss Americans taking Native Land Fearful that Tecumseh had British Backing, Harrison Urged Tecumseh to follow the Treaty of Greenville Tecumseh refused which would lead to war in with the Native Americans As Tecumseh tried to unify other tribes, the Shawnee were defeated by Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe

8 My dog jumped in and flipped my boat….I guess he:
Harrison Ordered an attack at Prophetstown and eventually forced the Native Americans to Retreat destroying Tecumseh’s Village Harrison then Defeated the Native Americans at the Battle of Tippecanoe After the loss at Tippecanoe, Tecumseh fled to Canada and formed an alliance with Great Britain

9 This Means War!! Some Americans wanted Britain punished for their acts at sea and for aiding the Native Americans War hawks like Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun and Andrew Jackson wanted to end impressment and interference with American Ships by declaring War Jackson, and others, also wanted to open up more US Trade markets, end native American Influence, and gain more land for settlement

10 1812 and Beyond There was opposition to war including:
New England Federalists Those afraid the United States was not ready to fight Those who already saw trade hurt in the United States President James Madison Asked congress to Declare war on Great Britain in 1812 Congress voted for war and James Madison would be the Commander in Chief of the war of 1812
