23rd APAN Meetings 2007 Dipak Singh ERNET India

2 IPv6 in ERNET

3 Agenda About ERNET IPv6 Activities in ERNET
IPv6 Peering with other network IPv6 Deployment in India February 24, 2019

4 About ERNET ERNET is a dedicated network for Education and Research Community in India. It connects premier educational and research institutes in the country ERNET India is a non profit making autonomous organisation under Administrative control of Dept. of Information Technology, Govt. of India. February 24, 2019

5 Network for Educational & Research Community
15 Point of presence (POPs) at premier E&R institutions in the country. User base 1200 institutions Terrestrial, VSAT STM-1 Ready Backbone Satellite Hub in C-band at Bangalore 150 Mbps Internet gateway bandwidth Dedicated Training Lab for ERNET users February 24, 2019

6 February 24, 2019

7 Activity on IPv6 To Encourage usage of IPv6 in ERNET, DIT asked ERNET to set up a IPv6 Test bed along with IIT Kanpur Major Objective Support Dual Stack IPv4 and IPv6 backbone Setup IPv6 Domain Name Server & IPv6 Mail Server at all PoP locations and test Mail Services using IPv6 Demonstrate following features supported by IPv6 Plug ‘n’ Play (Auto Configuration) Multicasting QoS Organise an IPv6 workshop for participants from academia and industry. February 24, 2019

8 Benefits of IPv6 Test Bed
Provide hands-on experience in managing a IPv6 network and system management. Sort out inter-operability issues Gain experience of implementing various transition mechanisms Define a seamless migration path from IPv4 to IPv6 ERNET (along with IIT Kanpur) can train ISPs and other networking professionals in implementing IPv6 in their network. February 24, 2019

9 Status of the Test Bed ERNET was alloted IPv6 address by APNIC (2001:0E30::/32) IPv6 address have been assigned to all PoPs and Backbone Links The CISCO IOS on backbone router were upgraded OSPFv3 along with OSPFv2 routing was deployed in backbone IPv6 DNS and Mail Server were setup and Mail services were tested on IPv6 All the objective were achieved and were demonstrated February 24, 2019

10 Present Status ERNET backbone is IPv4/IPv6 dual stack backbone
Demand for IPv6 connectivity from users yet to come February 24, 2019
