1 Journal 4-6: Regulating the Internal Environment

2 An Example of Homeostasis
Human body cells require O2 Nutrients produces CO2 Wastes The circulatory system, respiratory system, urinary system and digestive system all work together to maintain an internal balance.

3 Respiratory system Lungs - gas exchange External Internal
Environment blood (air) O2 CO2 Mouth/nose --> pharynx --> trachea --> bronchi --> bronchioles --> alveoli* *where diffusion of gases takes place

4 Digestive System (Review)
Small intestine – absorbs nutrients What diffuses from villi into bloodstream? Monomers of nutrients (carb/ lipid/ protein)

5 Urinary System Kidney - removes wastes from the blood
Nephron – basic working unit of kidney: Filtration - removes waste Absorption - takes back good things Secretion - removes extra waste Concentration - removes extra H2O Kidney -> ureter --> bladder --> urethra

7 You don’t need to write this down!
Hormone effects You don’t need to write this down! Think back to “Can you stand the heat?” What makes you dehydrated? What are some actions you can take to help? Also, the brain and adrenal glands will help you retain H2O Brain  antidiuretic hormone (ADH) Adrenal glands  aldosterone

8 Circulatory system Transports materials throughout the body To the body cells… Oxygen Nutrients From the body cells… Wastes Carbon dioxide Turn to a partner: for each material, where is it coming from and to? Where is diffusion taking place (be specific)?

9 Heart Moves blood through the body Valves prevent backflow Right side
Deoxygenated blood Pumps blood to the lungs Left side Oxygenated blood Pumps blood to the body Heart

10 Heart BODY  Vena cava  Rt Atrium  Rt Ventricle  Pulmonary arteries  LUNGS  Pulmonary veins  Lf Atrium  Lf Ventricle  Aorta  BODY

11 Veins, Arteries and Capillaries
Arteries - carry blood away from the heart Veins - carry blood toward the heart. Capillaries - tiny blood vessels Location of diffusion of….. Oxygen, Carbon dioxide Nutrients Wastes Turn to your partner – which system is responsible for the above?
