Activating Raise your hand if you have ever been to the beach/ocean.
Turn to your neighbor and share your favorite thing about the beach. Raise your hand if you ever went searching for sea shells during low tide? Why is it best to look for shells during low tide? And not high tide???
5
What is a tide? Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of Earth. Video Clip: (2mins) TnKUiE

Check for Understanding
What is a tide?
7
Answer Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels.
8
What causes tides? The gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and The rotation of the Earth. Video Clip: (5mins) s8BibE

Check for Understanding
What two factors cause tides?
10

12
Spring Tides Does not mean that they occur in the spring!!!
Just means that the sea level appears to “spring” up and is even higher than normal high tide. Which leaves even less ocean water for low tides, making them the lowest.
15
Check for Understanding
Explain how tides appear during spring tide. What moon phases will produce spring tides?
16
Answers During spring tides the water levels are the highest high tides and the lowest low tides. Spring tides occur during new and full moon phases.
17
Neap Tides Gravitational pull on ocean water is equal in all directions. Very little change during high and low tide levels.
18
Check for Understanding
How do ocean levels change during neap tides? What moon phases produce neap tides?
19
Answers High tide and low tide are almost the same level. Very little change in the water level. First and third quarter moon phases create neap tides.
20
Measure of tide levels during the month of Feb.
Sand Key Lighthouse, FL Measure of tide levels during the month of Feb. Blue represents the water levels. Notice the moon phases and corresponding water levels.
