2. In the fields near Bethlehem shepherds watched their flocks by night; heavenly angels came amongst them, round them shone God's glory bright.

3. Terror seized the shepherds then; till angles said, 'Do not fear, good tidings I bring: now your saviour is born in Bethlehem.'

4. Let us go to Bethlehem, said the shepherds, filled with joy, 'and we'll see there what has happened, which the Lord made known to us.'

5. Hastening there, they found Mary, Joseph, and the child in a lowly manger laid. And they told far and wide their wondrous news.
