Ch. 9 lesson 4 objectives Describe the stages one goes through in accepting a major loss, such as the death of a loved one Discuss ways to cope with a major loss

Stages of loss Stage 1(Denial) - Initial reaction, can’t believe the loss happened Stage 2 (Anger) - Why me?, you may be critical, uncooperative, demanding Stage 3 (Bargaining) - Pray or promise to change if the lost person could be returned

Stages of loss (cont) Stage 4 (Depression) – Silence, withdrawal, deep sense of sadness Stage 5 (Acceptance) – Sense of power that allows you to face reality in a constructive manner

See a counselor who specializes in grief response Talking about the loss helps you come to grips with reality of a loss
