Relevancy Institutionalize Visibility Partnership
When it comes to the IAOS, what is positioned in our minds is its people /members, IAOS biannual conference and the SJIAOS. And sometime – unintentionally - we forget that IAOS is just a voluntary organization…and we – intentionally – demand more because everyone wants a distinguished IAOS. All of that reflect the spirit of IAOS that we all cherish Partnership
3
To talk about the future of IAOS, one must stop and examine its status quo. And as statistician, we often feel more comfortable with numbers …………
4
IAOS Membership Individuals
During the period , there had been decrease in the number of individual members Then, for the last four years the number of individual members has been rising up with big jump in 2014 We all recognize that IAOS conference is a good vehicle to increase memberships
5
IAOS Membership Institutions
As for institutions, little has changed since 2007 Opportunity to partner with key organizations especially in the SJIAOS is an opportunity that we would like to explore more!
6
IAOS Conference Participants
As for IAOS conference, number of participants have been decreasing – The location of the conference, lack of funding are probable reasons More efforts are needed to identify main reasons!
7
Young Statisticians Prize Entries/countries
YSP is an innovative project that targets young statisticians # Entries/# represented countries still fluctuating But that is really not of great importance – Immediate target was to attract young statisticians and we’ve done that And the YSP is a good vehicle to attract young statisticians into IAOS! The question is how to retain them!
8
What we are good at, what we are weak at!
We now go to assessing our strengths and weaknesses. This would certainly help us in identifying strategic directions to focus on for the next two years
9
What distinguishes the IAOS from other similar organizations?
What is the role of the IAOS in the context of the global statistical community? What distinguishes the IAOS from other similar organizations? What is the agenda of the IAOS for ? Are IAOS activities relevant and do they meet expectations of stakeholders? What are the preferences of IAOS members regarding its services and outputs? But, why do we need a strategy? The strategy aims to provide answers to simple yet challenging questions related to roles of IAOS in the global statistical community, What really makes IAOS special or different! What does IAOS aim to achieve during the next two years? How do users perceive IAOS? What do members want from IAOS? All these are very legitimate questions that we should feel very comfortable in answering them! IAOS
10
What is IAOS? Before we dig deep into the details of IAOS, we need to capitalize on the structure of IAOS: As Stephen Penneck nicely phrased it Well, IAOS is a Voluntary organization Its members are People scattered around the globe Its vehicles to achieve its objectives are mainly SJIAOS, Conferences IAOS is well known within the statistical community? The question is how to maintain that and build on what has been achieved?
11
social media as a communication tool
IAOS Conferences to increase memberships Decreasing IAOS host prospects More attractive agenda item like FP 2014, SDGs International conference timetable very crowded important forum for non-official discussions Limited coordination across ISI family conferences standalone conferences active player in WSC good long-established journal YSP is an innovative way To start, situational analysis was needed to identify what we are good at, What are the areas that require more efforts from us to further develop and meet expectations? What are the challenges ahead that we must anticipate and get prepared for? And of course how to seize the different chances/developments happening around us to better serve IAOS? Based on this SWOT analysis, The strategic directions are being defined to build on current strengths, seek solutions to current weaknesses, identify regional and global opportunities that shall be seized to serve the broad purpose of IAOS, and take into account the global environment that shapes IAOS practices. limited formal engagement on major Official Statistics policy/direction Lack of members feedback limited influence on wider ISI directions Current website is static SJIAOS is largely dependent on energetic editor
12
IAOS What are our priorities! And how to address the future challenges with the help of IAOS members!
13
IAOS Strategy When we talk about a strategy for any organizations, there are usually keys for the successful implementation of the plan at hand And when it comes to the IAOS strategy for the years , the challenging part is to clearly identify and define these keys. So we spend a lot of time consulting with spectrum of members to get the right KEYS!
14
The heart of IAOS lies in its volunteering spirit of its members,
Based on that concept, for the strategy to succeed it must focus on people – the members. IAOS will become stronger through partnership and more engagement of members This is our master key
15
Fundamental Principles
We promote Partnership Respect Partnership: The IAOS seeks regional and international partnerships to strengthen technical cooperation in the field of official statistics while maintaining user perspective Respect: The IAOS strongly believes that "great ideas come from anywhere". Accordingly, regional cooperation and exchange of know-how crosses boundaries and has no limitations. Professional ethics: The IAOS strongly believes in the importance of promoting the statistical ethics issued by ISI Fundamental principles: The IAOS strongly believes in the importance of adopting the fundamental principles of official statistics Professional ethics Fundamental Principles
16
Relevancy Visibility Partnership Institutionalize
Based on that SWOT analysis, we defined our areas of priority – the keys for success - for the coming two years, That is, we defined our strategic objectives. The strategy addresses organizational and strategic directions to transform the IAOS to a more relevant entity in the international statistical community Institutionalize
17
To increase the relevancy of IAOS
Objective One To increase the relevancy of IAOS Objective Two To increase the visibility of IAOS at all levels Objective Three To create mutual beneficial Partnerships The strategy resides on four objectives that focus on people – members Relevancy to ensure IAOS remains attractive to its members, and to other peer organizations Visibility in various statistical events to maintain appropriate role in global statistical directions Partnership with peer organizations to better serve the global statistical community Institutionalize the work of IAOS so that in the future the focus shall be directed to development issues more than managerial matters Objective Four To Institutionalize IAOS functions
18
More engagement of members
First strategic objective: To increase the relevancy of IAOS More engagement of members Satisfaction Survey Members Profile Database More focus on Communication strategy that targets segmentation of users Measure members' satisfaction on a regular basis – IAOS conference is a great opportunity to interact with members and receive feedback on core services & development issues Develop members' profile database – could be part of future IAOS web portal as members driven database
19
Interests of Young Statisticians
First strategic objective: To increase the relevancy of IAOS emerging "Hot issues“ Interests of Young Statisticians IAOS Conf. themes Interest s of international organizations Align IAOS themes of conferences to the emerging "Hot issues“ Collaborate with international statistical organizations Make the IAOS attractive to more Young Statisticians by seeking more entries to the YSP and with higher quality papers
20
Second strategic objective: To increase the visibility of the IAOS at regional and international levels New members IAOS membership Diversification 40 60 Institution members 257 700 IAOS2016 Part 1 Current number of members of IAOS is about (400) Increase membership by 15-25% Diversify membership by targeting research centers, regional & International organizations, members of national statistical systems Increase the memberships of NSIs in the IAOS - More focus on institutional members (Current: 40 – Target: 60) Of course my Group of us wants to double the number – But some may think it is too ambitious! Part 2 IAOS2016: Target is about 700 participant compared to 257 in IAOS2014 with the opportunity for web broadcasting to selected sessions Part 3 Current web site static and limited in attractive content. Transform IAOS web site into a web portal with focus on content, presentation and interactions Play active role in statistical international events Content Presentation Interaction
21
Stronger relation with ISI's associations
Third strategic objective: To invest in creating mutual beneficial Partnerships Expand the traditional stakeholders of IAOS to include universities, regional and international organizations, research centers, and other governmental institutions Stronger relation with ISI's associations Increase memberships of NSIs in the IAOS Make SJIAOS as a brand product through partnership with reputable NSIs
22
Fourth strategic objective: Institutionalize IAOS functions
Written and well documented protocols related to IAOS's committees, functions of the IAOS president, functions of the IAOS president-elect, nomination of IAOS host countries, YSP competition, budgetary, reporting, …etc Committees IAOS President President Elect budgetary Function of Program Committee YSP competition Function of Program Committee Host of IAOS Conf.

Conferences and workshops
IAOS Abu Dhabi Governance workshop for Arab NSIs IAOS sponsored Sessions - ISI WSC 2017 Identify IAOS 2018 host country
25
Advocacy targeting young statisticians
YSP 2016, YSP 2017 IAOS Host countries own advocacy Developing and supporting membership Communication plan to increase individual members Partnership planning to increase institution members Member satisfaction survey Part one As for Advocacy targeting young statisticians YSP rounds for 2016 and 2017 will be conducted with focus to attract more entries with higher quality papers We also would like to encourage host countries to initiate their own contest that focus on young statisticians. We will see how things go in IAOS2916 Part two Our communication strategy shall target individuals as well as institutions to engage in IAOS IAOS Advocacy targeting a wide range of members (NSIs, Universities, research centers,…etc). Attracting institutions require developing mutual beneficial relationship – and may be SJIAOS is an attractive component in this relationship What do members think about the services of IAOS? What are the preferences of members? All that will come from a member satisfaction survey Part three As for the web site, the future web site will be the heart of IAOS communication strategy. More focus on content, or storing and retrieving relevant information in user friendly manner, and to support interaction and networking among IAOS family Overhaul of IAOS' web site Content management Database driven Interaction with members/users
26
IAOS president & President elect 2015 New Executive committee 2015
Succession Planning IAOS president & President elect 2015 New Executive committee 2015 IAOS president & President elect 2017 Develop IAOS Standard Procedural Manuals Part One In the midst of all of these details, we are full aware of the importance of attracting potential IAOS presidents and president elect and the executive committee Part Two Two key procedural manuals are of importance in the process of institutionalizing IAOS, YSP and IAOS conference. I think we have accumulated good experience in these two areas and that would be beneficial to put these experiences in procedural manuals. Develop YSP Procedural Manual Develop IAOS conference Procedural Manual
