Following the Civil War, U.S. military troops were sent to southern states Military was sent to help the seceding states rebuild and protect the rights of freed slaves

Reconstruction Constitutional Amendments: 13th Amendment: abolished slavery 14th Amendment: addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws 15th Amendment: prohibits government from using race or previous slave status as qualifications for voting

7 END OF RECONSTRUCTION The removal of federal troops caused an end to the Reconstruction Era in the south Led to the Democratic Party’s control of state governments in the south Many Reconstruction reforms were repealed

16 PLESSY VS. FERGUSON (1896) Separate Car Act – passed in Louisiana requiring separate accommodations for blacks and whites in railroads. Homer Plessy purchased a first class ticket to a whites only car and was arrested Supreme Court determined separate facilities were acceptable as long as they were equal Decision backed all segregation practices in the south

20 NATIVISM Fear of immigrants and minorities
Led to increased membership in discriminatory groups (Ku Klux Klan) Citizens believed the government should favor native inhabitants as opposed to immigrants
