1 Paper 1 Tips and Advice

2 Remember to pace yourself
5 minutes read over the entire test and be familiar with the excerpts 10 minutes answer question 1 – 5 minutes each question, get in and get out. Do not elaborate too much– that will come later. Make 3 points for each question. Three valid points will get you a top score. You do not get bonus points for more. However, if one of your points is weak, make a 4th point to cover your butt.

3 15 minutes into the Assessment you should be moving to question #2
Compare and Contrast two sources minutes for this question: 5 minutes per paragraph…. One paragraph comparing what they have in common. One paragraph contrasting what they disagree on. Make at least 3 points IN EACH PARAGRAPH!! Consider the perspectives, where are the sources from? Are they primary sources or secondary sources? Are they supportive of the topic or argumentative?

4 You are now 25 minutes into the test Evaluate the sources: OPVL
You should be answering question #3. Do not spend more than 10 minutes on this question. 2 paragraphs with AT LEAST THREE VALUES and THREE LIMITATIONS EACH!!! Quickly identify the origin and purpose of the excerpt in no more than 2 sentences. Evaluate the sources in regards to: who is the speaker? What is the perspective? Who do they represent? Who is left out? Based on their purpose, is there a problem? Is it a primary or secondary source? What is valuable or limiting about that?

5 You now have 20 minutes left and need to answer the final question
This is an essay response: 3-5 paragraphs. Put it all together: combine the sources and talk about the point/lesson learned. Make sure to quickly answer the question. To “expand” your responses, literally quote the excerpts to provide “concrete evidence” of your argument. This is where they encourage “personal knowledge” and you to tell everything you know. This question is worth the most points so go for it!
