2. What is “Human Geography”?
Human Geography is the study of people from a spatial and ecological perspective
Geography is all about “relationships”
How do people interact with the land?
How do people interact with each other?
Geographers seek to answer the question, “why is what where?”

4. Grading
70% = Summative Assessments (tests, projects, papers, and portfolios)
30%=Formative Assessments (homework, activities, maps, and quizzes)

5. Students will not be able to retest map tests.
Retesting
Retesting: Teachers have the discretion to provide remediation opportunities for summative assessments for all students, including but not limited to: test corrections, tutorials, and/or test retakes
Students will not be able to retest map tests.

6. Textbook
Human Geography: People, Place, and Culture (8th Edition); H.J. De Blij, Alexander B. Murphy, and Erin H. Fouberg
Please bring your text to class tomorrow.

7. Make-Up Work
You can find all assignments and notes that you miss while absent on my website.
If you miss a test, you will take it the day you return in class.
If you are absent any days before a test and return on a test day, you will take the test. Test reviews can be found on my website.
Projects are due the day the student returns. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain missed assignments from the instructor.
I will not remind you to make up your tests or projects.

8. Late Work
Late work is not acceptable, however I understand that things do happen. If you know you will be turning in an assignment late, you must communicate that to the instructor BEFORE the assignment is due. I will decide on a case by case basis if your work will be accepted, and if there will be a point deduction.

9. Tutorials
Tutorials are available from 6:45-7:10 am and from 2:45-3:15 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and by appointment

10. Notebooks and Supplies
You should have the following supplies every day:
Pen or pencil
Notebook or composition book to take notes
Colored Pencils (when needed)
You should also have the following supplies in order to complete your unit portfolios:
A binder (1.5 inch minimum)
A set of at least 7 dividers labeled “Unit 1”, “Unit 2”, etc.

I have created a website for this class. You may use the website to access course materials, or to me.

13. Reading Quizzes
Reading quizzes are always on Fridays and are open-notes
They consist of five short answer questions, and you will sometimes be allowed to answer the questions with a partner or small group
They will cover the objectives we will learn that week in class, so you will need to use your textbook, class notes, and AP review books to prepare for them

14. Map Tests
You will take one or two map tests each nine weeks for a summative grade
Map tests are always multiple-choice and you will not be able to retest
Your first map test is Monday, September 11th in the library
The class average on map tests is almost always above a 95%.

15. Unit Tests
Your unit tests always consist of two parts: answering free response questions and completing multiple-choice questions. You will only be able to retest the multiple-choice section.
Most tests are over two days, with the free response questions given on day one, and multiple-choice on day two.
FRQs are always written in blue or black pen and MC in pencil.
Your first unit test is on Thursday, Sept 28th and Friday, Sept 29th

16. Projects
You will complete a project each nine weeks, each to be completed using Google Classroom. You may have some class time to work on each project.
1st Nine Weeks: Regional Analysis (Individual)
2nd Nine Weeks: Pick-A-Ping Analysis (Individual)
3rd Nine Weeks: Agriculture Scavenger Hunt (Individual or small group)
4th Nine Weeks: Create-A-Continent (Individual)

17. Portfolios
You will turn in a portfolio each nine weeks that will consist of daily activities, reading quizzes, maps, handouts, and other activities.
The portfolio will need to be a binder (1.5 inch is recommended) with 7 dividers, labeled “Unit One”, “Unit Two”, etc.
You will receive a Table of Contents for each Unit, and the assignments need to be in the correct order and 100% complete for credit
The portfolio is cumulative, so you will need to keep all unit materials throughout the year

18. Dress Code
All dress code guidelines in the Magnolia ISD Student Handbook will be enforced.

19. Classroom Procedures Turn off cell phones & electronic devices
 No food or drink, except water
 Arrive to class on time & ready to learn
 Never line up at the door before dismissal
  Do not cheat, plagiarize, or copy work
 Use polite and appropriate language
 Do your best work & turn it in on time
 Pick up after yourself before you leave

20. About the AP Test
AP Human Geography has one of the highest passing rates among all other Social Studies AP tests.
It is composed of 75 multiple-choice questions, and three free response questions
The expectation for everyone taking this course is that you will take the AP Test in May
You will begin signing up for the exam in October
