In the story, he is only referred to as “The Terrible Old Man.” The most chilling aspect about listening to a serial killer talk abut his victims; the calmness in his voice. H.P. Lovecraft’s, “The Terrible Old Man” presents lots of unknowns. In H.P. Lovecraft’s story, “The Terrible Old Man,” Lovecraft uses different aspects of the unknown to create suspense. Lovecraft tells readers about the Old Man’s habits, all of which the purposes are unknown to the townspeople. Fear the emotion that has driven human evolution. H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Terrible Old Man,” is about an old man who is believed to have been a captain of East India ships. The Old Man, who’s origin and age are unknown, is a secretive fellow. In The Terrible Old Man, the unknown is what causes the house to be scary. Lovecraft uses scary images throughout “The Terrible Old Man”. The author of “The Terrible Old Man” H.P. Lovecraft uses imagery to convey fear. Only adding mystery, which in turn makes him more terrifying. The old man, “dwells all alone in a very ancient house.”
