1964 US Navy operations in Gulf of Tonkin (just off coast of N. Vietnam) Hit-and-run strikes & surveillance of radar August 1: S. Vietnam raids N. Vietnam coastal positions August 2: N. Vietnam attacks USS Maddox

1964 August 3: USS Maddox & USS Joy go back to Gulf of Tonkin – that evening radar suggests they are both under attack – both ships fire in direction of attackers August 4: President Johnson orders a retaliation August 6: Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Investigations later suggest there were never attackers present

1965 Operation Rolling Thunder: US campaign of limited bombing of select targets in NV, Feb. 1965 Did not work - Hanoi still fighting & sending supplies to Vietcong in South Vietcong gaining territory in South Little support for Saigon gov. in S.V. Situation getting worse, despite increased US involvement
