1. Lugubrious (la GOO bree us) adj. Mournful; gloomy; sad
The country singer was best known for his lugubrious songs of lost love. The teary-eyed father-of-the-bride spoke so lugubriously, he sounded like he was at a funeral, not a wedding!

2. Curmudgeon (ker MUHJ uhn ) noun A bad-tempered, difficult person
Their neighbor was an old curmudgeon who would always keep any balls that accidentally went into his yard. Mr. Fredricksen was a curmudgeon until Russell came along.

3. Languid (LANG gwid) adj.
Lacking energy; weak; showing little interest in anything After his bout with the flu, Joe was languid and unable to go to soccer practice for over a week. The teacher’s languid approach to teaching algebra did not motivate the class.

4. Influx (IN fluks) noun A mass arrival or incoming; a continuous arrival South Florida has an influx of northern tourists every winter. The school had to use portables until a new wing could be built because of the influx of new students.

5. Intrepid (in TREP id) adj. Fearless; bold
The intrepid bullfighter stood before the fierce bull in the middle of the arena. Ed intrepidly opened the hatch of the plane as he prepared to complete his first solo sky-dive.

having a feeling of superiority that displays itself in an overbearing attitude The supercilious bus driver made Laura feel like an idiot when she lost her bus pass. Despite being a wealthy and prominent figure in the community, he was not well-liked due to his supercilious attitude.

7. Abashed (uh BASHt) adj. ashamed or embarrassed
Jim was rather abashed when he was caught listening in on his sister’s phone conversation, so he quickly put down the receiver. The couple unabashedly made out in the school hallway.

8. Travail (trev VAYL) n. Strenuous physical or mental labor
or effort; very hard work Modern medicine has helped lessen the travail of childbirth. Both parents were too absorbed in their own travails to take much notice of their children.

9. Malcontent (mal kon TENT) noun
A discontented person; one who bears a grudge from a sense of grievance Some of the labor strikers were malcontents who did not work at the company. Our team always seems to have at least one malcontent who can negatively impact our team spirit.

10. Augment (awg MENT) v. To make or become larger
The king attempted to augment his army by going into villages and drafting men into service. The President augmented his problems by denying his involvement in any wrong doing.
