1 Genetics Project BIOLOGY

2 Turn in your genetics homework
Take out your notebook for a warm up

3 Warm Up A brown horse and a white horse have offspring that are heterozygous. Despite being heterozygous, the offspring express both phenotypes. What is this kind of inheritance is this an example of? Two pure breeding plants are crossed. One plant has blue flowers and the other has red flowers. What phenotype would be observed in F1 if flower color exhibited incomplete dominance?

4 Genetic Engineering… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IQczxxH3ts
We’ve been talking a lot about traits and allele combinations. In the future, we might be able to make designer babies (it is already possible). Pros/cons? (Mistakes, mutations, passing on diseases?) Evolution/survival of the fittest? For this project, pretend in this perfect world that we can create families based on traits that we pick. We will be doing our own genetic engineering of Pokemon.

5 GENETICS! Pokemon can be bred by leaving two compatible pokemon at the daycare. Must be of same species and opposite genders Breeding is usually possible as long as one of them is Ditto. Pokemon in the undiscovered egg group cant breed.

6 Art & Science Collide… Pick one Pokémon species
Brainstorm a list of possible traits Draft: Mom & Dad #1 Draft: Mom & Dad #2 Final: Mom & Dad (final) Phenotype/Genotype chart Punnett Squares Possible Offspring #1 Possible Offspring sibling #2 Do the drafts during the brainstorm process Don’t do punnett squares or final chart until later Rough sketch—don’t photocopy

7 Phenotype/Genotype Chart
Trait Dominant Recessive Tongue Long, frog-like (Ff, FF) Short (ff) Breath Fire-breathing (Bb, BB) Non-fire breathing (bb) Scale color Purple scales (Pp, PP) Green scales (pp) ….

8 Art Portion Colored, display worthy, creative
Show dimension using value (no flat line drawings) Shadows, medium tones, highlights Put time into quality Shiny version of pokemon pokemon fushion

9 Or, use Superheroes…

10 Warm Up

11 Warm Up A scientist crosses two plants and gets both red and white offspring. Red (R) is dominant over white (r) What could have been the genotypes of the two original plants? What one parental genotype could not have been present? Why?

12 Warm Up A cross between a blue unicorn and a red unicorn produces offspring that are purple. The color is determined by only TWO alleles. What are the genotypes of the parents? Genotypes of the purple offspring? Phenotypic ratios of offspring produced by two purple unicorns?

13 Your Goal Today Finish final mom & dad Finish phenotype/genotype chart
Finish punnett squares Start designing final 2 offspring

14 Phenotype/Genotype Chart
Trait Dominant Recessive Tongue Long, frog-like (Ff, female) Short (ff, male) Breath Fire-breathing (BB, male) Non-fire breathing (bb, female ) Scale color Purple scales (Pp, male) Green scales (pp, female) Ears Pointy (Pp, male / Pp, female) Round Punnett squares should be labelled with: Trait, genotypes, circle for offspring traits
