6 Recombinant DNA technology
Recombinant DNA: adding or removing portions of DNA from an organism to create offspring with desired traits. The human gene for insulin was placed in bacteria to produce insulin in large quantities for diabetics. These bacteria are recombinant organisms or transgenic life forms. It is possible to create genetically modified organisms because of the universal nature of the genetic code.
