How do we get better outcomes from science?
By making sure that everyone is doing what they need to do We can’t afford any slack in the system We need to be innovation outliers Government & business & academia & research organisations all need to work well together

World class science in some areas Cost of innovation low Connections to growth markets in Asia Ease of doing business Connectedness inside NZ Our science is what the world wants eg food, life sciences Political commitment to change

NZ challenges Scale / distance Industry structure
Connections between business & science could be better Some fear of overseas investment Lack of insightful capital at the right scale STEM skills Applied science & business translators lacking No clear vision - yet!

So what should we concentrate on?
The power of ‘and’ - not the tyranny of ‘or’ EVERBODY involved: govt/research/business Understand what value to NZ looks like Agree a plan Be ambitious Understand our customers Encourage translators

The most profound and long term competitive advantage NZ will have is the power of science and innovation translated to business success.
