Proprioception Testing Device
Lee C. Groeneweg, EGR Thomas A. Farley, EGR Steve Brodnicki, SPT Ryane Eno, SPT Mike Terrell, SPT
2
Definition of Proprioception
Joint position sense without visual input Measurements help inform physical therapist of patient’s ability to determine limb location in space Also helpful in determining whether therapy interventions are necessary
3
Project Overview Device to isolate and measure internal and external rotation of shoulder joint Internal Shoulder Rotation External Shoulder Rotation
4
Statement of Need Device to isolate and measure internal and external rotation of shoulder joint Must measure degrees similar to physical therapist’s goniometer Test position must be self restraining (Locking)
5
Project Specifications
Isolation and measurement of shoulder internal and external rotation Position of body - lying down on table No computer technology Easily used in a clinical setting Portable and light Measurement in degrees Inexpensive Test position must be self restraining (Locking)
6
Design Constraints Patient positioned lying on back
Shoulder blade must be immobilized Upper arm positioned 90° to body restrained allowing longitudinal motion in a resting position Elbow must be positioned 90° to upper arm
7
Prototype Stage Discuss ideas 2-D CAD drawings Foam poster board
Convey 3-D concept Receive approval
8
Production Stage Approval of prototype design Updated 2-D CAD drawings
Process plan for manufacturing Obtain material Manufacture parts Assemble parts for fit Test for proper function
9

16
Features & Benefits Adjustable for multiple users
Lightweight materials Fully Collapsible Portable while assembled Design is a baseline for future devices
17
Demonstration of Proprioception
Blind fold individual Place the limb into a test position Hold in test position for a few seconds Record angle of test position Return to starting position Patient places limb into the testing position Record angle of repeated attempt
