1 Project Introduction Spring 2017

2 InSPIRESS Challenge Design an autonomous science payload for the Neptune Orbiter and Triton Explorer (NOTE) Mission Determine the purpose(s), or objective(s) of your scientific payload Understand, follow, and communicate the engineering design process Work on a team to communicate your payload design to an evaluation board Conduct Community Engagement Activity (CEA) events in your local community to explain your mission Organize and conduct events that engage the local community in your mission Provide proof of these events Gather data on the events’ audiences Communicate the results of these events to an external review board

3 Payload Constraints Mass: Up to 10 kg Volume: 44 cm x 24 cm x 28 cm
Survive environment No harm to the main spacecraft 28 cm 24 cm 44 cm

7 Your Design Job Select a science objective for your payload
Develop a logical flow (called a Science Traceability Matrix) that shows the link between the science objective and the instruments needed to provide the data to meet the objective Understand the engineering requirements that are imposed on your Payload UAH constraints, environments, functions, and science Understand the different design options for your payload Choose the “best” solution Define what “best” means Refine design based on physics and engineering analysis Explain your analysis, assumptions, and decision Provide a prototype of your payload

8 Technical Design

9 Communicating Your Design
Written documents Payload Concept Proposal (8 pages + 1 title page) Evaluated by UAH IPT students Briefings Payload Status Review (10 minutes) Payload Concept Review (20 minutes) Final Review (20 minutes) Evaluated by local aerospace industry

10 Communicating Your Design

11 Engaging the Community
Team Identity: name, logo, and slogan Create the poster for Open House Poster Session Community Engagement Activity Plan an event that relates to your project and engages the community Keep your teacher involved in the planning process Execute the event, making sure to document and survey the visitors Submit a summary of your CEA Visitor Survey data Briefings Give a description of your plan/idea during the Payload Status Review Give a summary of your activity, with survey results and photos, in the Open House Poster Session, Payload Concept Review and Final Review

12 Engaging the Community
“Field” Testing and demonstrations that influences engineering design Presenting to other students “Parents’ Nights” (with demonstrations, presentations, etc)

13 Providing Team Leadership
Keep the team motivated and on task Develop and continue to update a schedule of the project Understand all project requirements Understand all competition rules and procedures Understand all evaluation criteria for each review and deliverable Make sure all deliverables are submitted on time

14 Neptune Orbiter and Triton Explorer (NOTE) Mission
3000 km altitude Circular polar orbit 2 Earth-year duration (24 months) Perform remote-sensing science at Neptune Triton 100 km altitude Perform remote-sensing at science Triton Triton Lander Land at South Pole Near cryovolcano (geyser) 90 Earth-day duration (3 months) Perform direct-contact science at Triton’s South Pole Note: The space-vehicle images are only representative; these are not renderings of spacecraft for Neptune and/or Triton.

15 Neptune Orbiter and Triton Explorer (NOTE) Mission
100 km circular polar orbit about Triton, for 2 Earth years 3000 km circular polar orbit about Neptune, for 2 Earth years Neptune Mission Timeline Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Neptune Orbiter Triton Orbiter Triton Lander

16 How Do You Win? Competition Evaluation
Component Maximum Points Audience When Evaluated Open House Poster Session 20 Local Community Review the RFP for specific dates Payload Concept Proposal UAH IPT Students Final Review Presentation 50 Review Board Community Engagement Activity Data 10 1 point/50 visitors

17 Divisions D1 D2 D3 5-9 divisions Only compete within a division Team
4-5 Teams per division Divisions created by location (AL, TX, ND, and SC) and type of class (engineering, physics, other) Only compete within a division D1 Team D2 D3

18 Stuff to Review Request for Payloads Website
Provides the requirements and constraints Tells you what you have to do for the competition Gives you the format guidelines and what is required for each review/document Website Has templates and other stuff for you to use Projects and Events Can read about previous projects and activities See what to expect Archives Look at past proposals, presentations, posters, etc. See what makes a winning proposal

19 Assignments Take forms to parents Complete survey on-line from teacher
Permission Forms Parent Survey Complete survey on-line from teacher Use the code in your book (should match the code on your parent survey) Read Pages 7 & 8 in the InSPIRESS Design Notebook Please think about what position you would like Form teams Team addresses
