6 Fig. 25.9 This diagram is showing how vascular plants are organized. The stomata are shown doing gas exchange in the first picture. The second and third picture show the xylem (water) and phloem (sugar) of both the stem and roots of the dandelion.

7 Transpiration is a powerful force that is part of the water cycle.
Fig Transpiration is a powerful force that is part of the water cycle. It involves adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension. It explains how water can get to the top of a 300’ tall redwood tree without energy or muscles.

8 Xylem transport water in vascular plants.
Fig Xylem transport water in vascular plants. Phloem transport food (glucose) in vascular plants.

9 Stomata open – gas exchange occurs
Page 482 Stomata open – gas exchange occurs Stomata closed – no gas exchange occurs

10 WATER POTENTIAL The measure of the relative tendency of water to move from one area to another, and is commonly represented by the Greek letter Ψ (Psi). Water potential is caused by osmosis, mechanical pressure, or surface tension.

11 Water potential is shown in the diagram to the right.
Note there is a semi-permeable membrane in the middle of the U-tube. Water potential can change as the environment changes.
