Jada and Jenny met invariably in the park after school. Tentatively (adv) hesitantly; with uncertainty The glass was placed on the shelf tentatively so it wouldn’t break. Blasphemy (n) the act of speaking offensively about sacred things The priest accused Joel of blasphemy when he spoke against the church. Enveloped (v) covered The crisp, cold snow enveloped the mountain. Evasive (adj) shifty; tending to avoid commitment My father becomes evasive whenever I ask if I can borrow the car. Raucous (adj) loud; unruly The class became raucous whenever the teacher was out of the classroom.

TERM: Memoir An account of one portion of a person’s life, as told by that person. It is similar to an autobiography, but usually does not cover the author’s full life span.

TERM: Historical/Cultural Context
The time and place in which the work is set or in which it was written. The historical/cultural context is revealed by specific details. Details include: events, beliefs and customs How can I identify it? How can I identify examples? Read the author’s biography and other text aids Identify references to historical/cultural events, beliefs and customs Notice the ways in which your reactions to ideas and situations in the work differ from the reactions of the characters; it might indicate a difference in cultural beliefs or modern customs. Note how characters’ behaviors and attitudes reflect the context
