1 Nuts and Bolts Quarter 1 Principles of Science
May 6, 2006 Nuts and Bolts Quarter 1 Principles of Science

2 Interactive Notebook In-Question
What is sustainability and what factors influence sustainability? Write your answer in your notebook – FAST! Compare your answer with your tablemates Write one response on the big paper on the board – no duplications and FAST! What are the major themes emerging from the group consensus?

3 Chapter 1 Goals: Relate sustainability to survival
Identify survival needs Relate survival to energy and energy transfer How do science and technology help meet survival needs Introduce need for controlling variables Trade-offs in fuel choice and use Investigate a case study in sustainability

4 Chapter 1: Themes Energy Population Resource Use

5 Activities 1.1 – Done during in-service 1.2 - Done during in-service
1.3 - Measuring Energy in a Nut Look in Teacher Guide for Supplies and Setup Follow Directions on your lab sheet and record your data – 15 minutes. Look at the analysis questions and write one more question that you are interested in studying as your out-question in your notebook. 1.4 – Done during in-service

6 Essential Vocabulary Sustainability Survival Stored energy
Energy transfer Energy source Metabolism Renewable resource Theory Trade-off Page 5 – Teacher Guide

7 Content Energy is necessary for survival
Many forms of energy are not directly usable and must be transformed First Law of Thermodynamics: we cannot draw more energy from a source than the amount of energy that is stored in that source Different foods and fuels contain different amounts of energy

8 Content Not only is the source of energy important but access to the energy is of huge importance – It must be accounted for in the total energy budget Second Law of Thermodynamics: thermal energy (heat) is always transferred from areas of higher energy to areas of lower energy

9 Content To get the most energy from a food supply, we need to obtain the food in edible form with minimum energy expenditure. What are the characteristics of such sources?

10 Chapter 1 Energy Population Assessment ?? Would you recommend
the use of nuts for food, fuel, or both? Cite evidence from your work that supports your choice and explain why you choose one over the other. Write your answer in your notebook. Sustainability Resource Use
