1 War Hawks Chapter 11 Section 4

2 After two terms as President, Jefferson retired to his beloved Monticello. He said to a friend, “Never did a prisoner, released from his chains, feel such relief as I shall on shaking of the shackles of power.”

3 In writing his epitaph for his own tombstone, Jefferson chose to be remembered for accomplishments other than for being President. The short epitaph reads: “Author of the Declaration of Independence, of Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia.”

4 James Madison Takes Over
A. James Madison, Jefferson’s secretary of state, won the presidential election of 1808. B. In 1810, Congress passed a new law opening trade with all nations. It allowed the President to reinstate the embargo if France or Britain again interfered with American ships. C. The British, however, continued their attacks on American ships. In 1811, Madison cut off trade with Britain. The two countries moved closer to war.

6 Who Am I? I am Tecumseh’s brother, Tenskwatawa, the prophet. I was a Shaman, or a religious leader, and I helped my brother found Prophetstown, the center of our Indian confederation.

7 Native American Resistance
A. The British-American struggle on the seas was linked to ongoing conflicts with Native Americans in the Ohio Valley and Northwest Territory. The British in Canada supplied weapons to Native Americans who were struggling to keep settlers off their land. B. One of the leaders of the Native Americans in this region was the Shawnee chief Tecumseh. C. In 1810, Tecumseh and the U.S. military clashed in the Battle of Tippecanoe in present-day Indiana. Many soldiers and warriors died. The battle marked the beginning of a long, deadly war between Native Americans and white settlers on the frontier.

9 BATTLE OF TIPPECANOE In 1811 while Tecumseh was away, the U.S. attacked Prophetstown. 1,000 soldiers surprised the settlement and The Prophet panicked. Many soldiers and indians died and Prophetstown was burned to the ground. This was the beginning of a long and deadly war between the Native Americans and white settlers on the frontier.

10 Tecumseh was described as one of those uncommon geniuses which spring up occasionally to produce revolutions and overturn the established order of things. Can you think of any people that have these characteristics today?P.S. think outside of politics!!!

13 What is this? SHAMAN: A member of certain tribal societies who acts as a medium between the visible world and an invisible spirit world and who practices magic or sorcery for purposes of healing, divination, and control over natural events.

14 A Call for War A. A growing number of Americans called for war against Great Britain. They were known as war hawks. B. Anti-British feelings were strongest in the West and South. Westerners believed there could be no peace on the frontier until the British were so pushed out of North America. Meanwhile, Southerners wanted to obtain Florida from Spain, which was Britain’s ally. C. Madison soon gave in to the demands of the war hawks, and in June 1812, he asked Congress to declare war on Great Britain.
