SLO review type info questions for 8th graders
Main theme is ENERGY
2
What forms of energy are used in the rock cycle?
Mechanical, nuclear, electromagnetic, thermal Thermal and electromagnetic
3
If clay is dropped from 4 feet above the floor, it speeds up and flattens when it hits the floor. The clay becomes warmer upon the hit—why? Potential to kinetic and the motion hits the floor and produces thermal energy
4
What is an example of light energy changing to chemical energy……
Solar panel that charges a battery Flashlight with rechargeable batteries A switch that flips up to turn on a light Food that is eaten to provide mechanical energy
5
Less energy is available at each successive level of the food chain because. . . .
There is actually more energy available at each successive level of the food chain They only eat 10% of the organism Most of the energy is used up by the organism Most of the energy of the organism is transferred to the environment as heat Most of the energy of the organism is transferred to the environment as heat
6
What kinds of energy are produced by bright fireworks?
Electricity, steam, motion, gravity, sound, magnetism, light, heat? Light and heat
7
Which of the following energy sources are available at each successive level of the food chain?
The full amount ½ the original amount About 10% for each level Most of the energy is used up by the organism itself so not much will go on for another organism Most of the energy is transferred as heat to the atmosphere. Most of the energy is used up by the organism itself so not much will go on for another organism.
8
Does energy conversion happen when animals use respiration? Explain…..
Yes! Chemical energy is converted to mechanical energy. Food for movement---body chemically changes it for use.
9
What is the energy transference between the sun and a plant?
Light is radiated from the sun and directly absorbed by the plant through the process of photosynthesis---which is a chemical energy transfer used as food by the plant and then used for growth of the plant.
10
If you watch a swinging ball held from a string---why does the ball eventually stop swinging?
The motion energy called kinetic energy of the ball is transferred somewhere else through a small amount of friction from the air. So the energy is transferred to the air as it swings side to side.
11
What types of waves do Earthquakes cause?
Seismic which are a combination of transverse and compressional.
12
What happens to molecules when heat is added and taken away.
Heat speeds up molecules and cold slows them down…..DUH!!!!!
13
So what about heat and cold and molecules…
So what about heat and cold and molecules….………cold-barely moving room temp moving slightly and hot bouncing all over with high energy levels—more heat (energy) more movement and further apart.
14
Why do hot things cool----or do they?
Generally the heat is transferred from the “hot” item to the surrounding area which is not as high in temperature—remember molecules act through diffusion---they want to go where there are less of what they are……
15
What types of energy will a bike having while being rode up and down a hill?
16
While not moving and at the top of a hill there is potential (storage) energy. Once the bike starts downhill, it is kinetic (moving) energy. As the bike tires move along the road there is friction between the bike tires and road and this gives off thermal energy.
17
I think that is about it---any questions about other concepts you are confused about?
Then….
