Hotspots
2
Hot Spot Volcanoes Relatively fixed areas where extremely hot areas in the mantle melt through the crust and produce volcanoes.
3
Unlike the volcanoes formed at plate boundaries these hot spot volcanoes often happen in the middle of oceanic or continental crust.
4
Yellowstone National Park sits on top of another hot spot.
5
As the plate slides over the hotspot, the old volcanoes move away from the hotspot and erode. At the hotspot, a new volcano forms. By using the age of the volcanoes, we can then determine direction and speed of the plate.
