The treaty forms an integral part of the way New Zealand is governed - it is an enduring document and its principles are still being refined on an on-going basis
When developing new policies the government has a duty to consult with Māori
As a result many official policies now have treaty considerations embedded in them
But it is not just a government issue - even though businesses that are not crown entities do not have to include Treaty of Waitangi principles in their policies and practices many do
