TAKE OFF You need: A pencil, eraser, scissors and your Science duo-tang
2
Get Started Think of something that flies. Work with a partner to try to guess what each other is thinking. Use only questions that can be answered with YES or NO
3
Work On It Take some time to brainstorm the best strategy to building a glider
4
Work On It Brainstorm the design of your glider
Use the provided materials to make your glider Remember to think economically and efficiently Once your glider is ready, take it to the airports!
5
Work On It Which task did your flying device perform best? Put your device at that airport. Fly over a desk 5m away and land on the other side Complete one air trick, such as a loop, a sharp turn left/right, or a trick of your choice Fly as close as possible to a target on a desk
6
Communicate Complete Communicate questions 1-5 on page 22
7
Build on What You Know Draw a picture of the flying device you like best. Describe what you like about it, what task it performed best, and why you think it performed well on that task.
8
When you throw your flying device, you are adding thrust to your glider. This creates a flow of air across the wings, which in turn creates enough lift to overcome gravity. As the energy from the throw dissipates, friction with the air slows the plane and gravity begins to pull it down.
