What will be we focusing on for the first few weeks?
Creating a supportive and fair environment in which to work Team work Becoming familiar with the expectations of being in Primary 5 Challenging ourselves Numeracy: -Mental maths strategies -Times Tables -A reminder of basic number work Literacy: -Developing our writing by using VCOP and up-levelling sentences Health & Wellbeing: -Growth Mind-set -Being a good friend and a good team member

Focus for Term 2: October- December
Health & Wellbeing: -Tennis (tennis tournament) -Understanding how to express our feelings and develop the ability to talk about them (Knowing Me, Knowing You) Literacy: -Developing our reading skills and enjoyment of books -Using a variety of strategies to improve and develop our writing -Word Aware Numeracy: Further developing mental maths strategies Continued Times tables work to allow progression into division Transferring the maths skills we are learning into a context Project: -Children will be given specific outcomes which we have to cover and then have the opportunity to discuss and choose which topics they would like to learn about

Terms used in P.5 We use many specific words/phrases in school which your child should be able to explain to you. e.g. phonics – another name for the learning of “sounds” phoneme – a single unit of sound, e.g. ‘ay’ in holiday. number bonds - two numbers that go together to make another number, e.g. 6+4=10 (this is called a ‘number bond of 10’). Children should have automatic recall of number bonds so they can transfer in larger sums, e.g = 100 Up-levelling – using VCOP (Vocabulary, Connective, Openers & Punctuation) to improve a piece of writing. Metacognition – thinking about thinking, e.g. understanding how you think / learn Visualisation – the picture that you create in your head when you read a text Metalinguistics – focusing on words and their meanings
