Nov. 12, 2014 Day B Exploratory Math English LUNCH Science locker Social Studies

Nov. 12, 2014 Activator: In your notebook, solve this problem: ½ ÷ ¼ = 2

Nov. 12, 2014 Objective: SWBAT: use fraction bars and area models to show the division of fractions by fractions with common denominators when solving exercises 1-5.

Page S.11 Nov. 12, 2014

Page S.11: Example 1 Nov. 12, 2014 One way to interpret the question is to say how many 2/9 are in 8/9. From the model, I can see that there are 4 groups of 2/9 in 8/9. This would give the same solution as dividing 8 by 2 to get 4.

Page S.12: Example 2 Nov. 12, 2014 One way to interpret the question is to say how many 3/12 are in 9/12. In other words, I need to divide nine twelfths by three twelfths, which is the same as 9 units ÷ 3 units, which is 3.

Page S.12: Example 3 Nov. 12, 2014 One way to interpret the question is to say how many 3/9 are in 7/9. In other words, I need to divide seven ninths by three ninths, which is the same as 7 units ÷ 3 units, which is 2⅓.

Nov. 12, 2014 Classwork (17 mins): With a partner. Pg # 1- 6

Imagine that your best friend missed today’s lesson.
Closing ( 5 minutes) Nov. 12, 2014 Imagine that your best friend missed today’s lesson. What key ideas would you want your friend to know in order to be able to divide fractions by fractions with the same denominator? We can use a variety of models to show that when dividing fractions by fractions with the same denominator, it is equivalent to dividing the numerators.

How do you feel? Nov. 12, 2014 topic.

Nov. 12, 2014 Exit Ticket: Pick one to solve (in notebook) and draw a model to support your answer.
