3 What is CAM? Complimentary and Alternative Medicine
CAM offers a broad range of health choices to today’s consumers Is used together with conventional medicine According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) over 38% of adults use some form of CAM

4 Different Types of CAM Natural Products- Herbal medicines, vitamins, minerals, Dietary supplements- many of these are sold over the counter Mind-Body Medicine- Meditation, Yoga, Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicines, Relaxation Exercise’s Manipulative and Body-Based Practices- Focuses primarily on the body and Joints- Ex. Spinal manipulation, Massage therapy Energy Medicine- Involves use of energy fields, such as magnetic or biofields- Ex. Therapeutic touch

5 Herbal Remedies An herb is a plant or plant part used for its scent, flavor, or therapeutic properties Tend to milder than regular medication

6 Herbal Remedies cont. Forms-Freeze-dried extracts which are very stable and good value for your money. Standardized extracts are often available at in pill or capsule form, and are among the most reliable forms of herbal medicine Examples of Herbal Medicine- Flaxseed useful as a laxative, oil is used for arthritis, cholesterol level reduction Green Tea- useful for lowering cholesterol, boosting heart health, and mental alertness Marijuana- used for relaxation, nausea, headaches, anorexia, cataracts, glaucoma

7 Benefits of CAM Focuses on spiritual aspect instead of drug aspect
More and more insurers are covering alternative care Not very many side effects with herbal supplements Less chance of developing addiction compared to conventional medicine

Provides a cheaper medicine than conventional medicine Helps feelings and emotions that affect your overall health More of a safer way to use medication More of a natural feeling and aspect in medicine

Read the Labels on the Alternative Medicine to know what is medicine Speak with your Dr. before taking Look up products history/research Know the side effects that could occur with that product
