2 What is mathematical induction
Mathematical induction is used to prove conjectures. More specifically, for this lesson, mathematical induction will be used to prove summation formulas. Steps for induction: Basis Step: Verify that a conjecture ๐‘ƒ ๐‘› is true for ๐‘›=1 Inductive Hypothesis: Assume that ๐‘ƒ ๐‘› is true for ๐‘›=๐‘˜ Inductive Step: Use the assumption to prove that ๐‘ƒ ๐‘› is also true for ๐‘›=๐‘˜+1

3 Example Use mathematical induction to prove that the sum of the first ๐‘› even positive integers is ๐‘› 2 +๐‘›. That is, prove that โ€ฆ+2๐‘›= ๐‘› 2 +๐‘› is true for all positive integers ๐‘›.
