1
Pop Quiz! No Talking- If you talk, it’s an automatic ZERO
2
What are the four organic macromolecules that you are made of?
State one function of carbohydrates. State one function of lipids. Name the process by which polymers such as polysaccharides are formed or synthesized? What makes a compound organic?
3
Elements and macromolecules packet
Complete Lipids section
5
PROTEINS
6
ELEMENTS FOUND IN PROTEINS
CARBON (C) HYDROGEN (H) OXYGEN (O) NITROGEN (N) How is this different from carbohydrates and lipids? Carbs and lipids don’t have nitrogen in them
7
Structure of Proteins They are chains of amino acids
Proteins are polymers the monomer = amino acid There are 20 different All the proteins of all organisms are made of the same 20 amino acids
8
There are thousands of different proteins
There are more than a million known species on Earth There are tens to hundreds of millions of individuals belonging to each species Each of those individuals has unique proteins How can there be so many different proteins if there are only 20 amino acids? The sequence of the amino acids can be arranged and rearranged in an almost infinite number of ways
9
These are proteins Enzymes
We will focus on the structure and function of these proteins in this unit Pigments Antibodies we will examine these proteins later in the year Most hormones Transport proteins
10
Major functions of proteins
Growth and repair of tissues Transport Enzymatic catalysts Buffers Energy
11
Basic structure of an amino acid
Take out your colors! Lets draw the basic structure of an amino acid!!!
12
Amino acids The basic amino acid form has a carboxyl group on one end and an amino group on the other end. All amino acids also have an R group AN R GROUP IS ANY GROUP OF ATOMS – THIS CHANGES THE PROPERTIES OF THE PROTEIN!
13
Tonight’s Homework: Proteins Review Worksheet
DO NOW Answer the following Questions: Why are proteins Important? What are some examples of proteins? What is the monomer/basic unit of a protein? Tonight’s Homework: Proteins Review Worksheet
14
More vocab!!!! Yeah! I love science vocab! Give me more!
Essential amino acid— an amino acid that animals cannot make so they must obtain them from food Polypeptide— a chain of amino acids Peptide bond— a special name for the bond that holds amino acids together
15
Dipeptide formed from two amino acid subunits
Formed by the process of Dehydration Synthesis Write a word equation for the dehydration synthesis of a dipeptide amino acid + amino acid dipeptide + water
16
Hydrolysis of a dipeptide
Breaking down of a dipeptide into amino acids Write a word equation for the hydrolysis of a dipeptide dipeptide + H2O ---> amino acid + amino acid
17
Polypeptide (protein)
composed of three or more amino acids linked by synthesis reactions Examples of proteins include insulin, hemoglobin, and enzymes.
