6.2 Notes The Theory of Plate Tectonics
2
6.2 Notes Plate Tectonics– the theory that the Earth’s lithosphere is divided into plates that move around on the asthenosphere Tectonic Plates – pieces of the crust or lithosphere that float on the asthenosphere
3
6.2 Notes Convection current – hot liquid rises while cool liquid sinks creating a circular current Convection currents in the mantle/asthenosphere cause the plates to move Caused by a difference in temperature from the core Convection currents can happen in either liquid or gas Subduction zone – oceanic crust sinks under continental crust at a convergent boundary creating a trench Trench – a deep dark hole
4
Convection Currents cause the plates to move
5
Many times volcanoes are created at subduction zones (convergent boundaries or reverse faults)
