Thermal Energy Temperature and Heat
2
The Kinetic Theory of Matter
All of the particles that make up matter are constantly in motion Solid= vibrating atoms Liquid= flowing atoms Gas= move freely Plasma= move freely and incredibly fast
3
What is thermal energy? Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of all particles in a substance. Thermal energy is measured in joules (J).
4
What is the difference between thermal energy and temperature?
Temperature is related to the average kinetic energy of particles. Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of all the particles. For example, a glass of water can have the same temperature as a lake, but the lake has much more thermal energy because the lake contains many more water molecules. Temperature and total amount of particles determine the thermal energy of a substance.
7
A. Temperature 1. Temperature
is measured with a thermometer and can be measured in Kelvin, Celsius, and Fahrenheit SI unit for temp. is the Kelvin Absolute zero-temperature at which particles stop moving 0oK
8
A B Which beaker of water has more thermal energy?
B - same temperature, more mass 200 mL 80ºC A 400 mL B
9
2. Heat a. The flow of thermal energy from one object to another.
Cup gets cooler while hand gets warmer 2. Heat a. The flow of thermal energy from one object to another. b. Heat always flows from warmer to cooler objects. Ice gets warmer while hand gets cooler

A. How is heat transferred?
What type of HEAT TRANSFER is occurring in the pictures? Conduction, convection or radiation? CONDUCTION – The transfer of thermal energy with no transfer of matter.
12
HEAT TRANSFER What type of HEAT TRANSFER is occurring in the pictures? Conduction, convection or radiation? CONVECTION – The transfer of thermal energy when particles of a liquid or gas move from one place to another
13
HEAT TRANSFER CONVECTION – in the earth and sun
The circular flow of hot and cold creates convection currents
14
HEAT TRANSFER What type of HEAT TRANSFER is occurring in the pictures? Conduction, convection or radiation? RADIATION – The transfer of thermal energy by waves moving through space. ALL OBJECTS radiate energy!

THERMAL ENERGY & MATTER: Journal
Define Convection, Conduction and Radiation Give an example of each. Write a sentence describing how each is important to our everyday lives. How do we use heat in our everyday lives?
