1
Introduction Graphing in all four quadrants of a coordinate plane
2
Fifth Grade Standard Geometry and Spatial Sense Standard
Extend understanding of coordinate system to include points whose x or y values may be negative numbers.
3
Vocabulary Words Plane Coordinate Plane Cartesian Plane
Coordinates Ordered Pair Point Point of Origin Origin X-Axis X-Coordinate Y-Axis Y-Coordinate Quadrants
4
Plane A flat surface extending in all directions. A plane is a two-dimensional figure.
5
Coordinate Plane or Cartesian Plane
(-5, 2) (4, 4) (-3, -3) (3, -6) The plane formed by a horizontal axis and a vertical axis, often labeled the x-axis and y-axis, respectively.
6
Coordinates or Ordered Pair
On the coordinate plane, the pair of numbers giving the location of a point (ordered pair). Example: (1,2)
7
Coordinate or Point The coordinates are put together by the two axis.
(X,Y)
8
Point of Origin or Origin
On the coordinate plane, the point (0, 0). That is, the point of intersection of the x- and y-axes.
9
Origin Origin is where the X axis and Y axis intersect Origin (0,0)
10
X & Y Axis ( remember over, up or down)
X-Axis-- The first coordinate is the horizontal position. (X,Y) Y-Axis-- The second coordinate is the vertical position. (X,Y)
11
X & Y Coordinates ( first number, last number)
X-Coordinate-- The first number in the ordered pair. (*X,Y) Y-Coordinate-- The second number in the ordered pair. (X,*Y)
12
Quadrants 1) I (+,+) 2) II (-,+) 3) III (-, -) 4) IV (+,-)
There are four Quadrants 1) I (+,+) 2) II (-,+) 3) III (-, -) 4) IV (+,-)
