Citing Evidence Stepping up as a Scholar
2
Why do we cite Evidence... What does it require…
We cite evidence because it gives critical support to the ideas, suggestions and thoughts we have. What does it require… Citing evidence requires you to think more deeply about the text, analyze the author, source etc. Citing textual evidence requires you to look back into the text for evidence to support an idea, answer a question or make a claim.
3
How do we do it... You will state your thought, suggestion or claim. Then use one of the following sentence starters… On page ____, it said… On line _____, it said… The author wrote… For instance, According to the text… Based on the visual clues in the illustration… End with a concluding statement. NEVER end with a quote when citing evidence.
4
Example... The author feels a sense of duty to do right even with the lack of choices they have. I say this because in the first stanza, she writes in line 3 - 5, “then my job is to not do what I don’t want to do.” The choice of the word “job” indicates that it is her responsibility or duty to not do what she shouldn’t.

Question 3 - page 12 Homework: On page 4 of your ISN, you are to write out question #3. You have answered this question already. Look at it again and revise your answer making sure to cite evidence and add a concluding sentence. Your answer will have a minimum of 3 complete sentences.
