1 Aim: How do chemists calculate the mass of one mole of a substance?
A balanced chemical equation represents conservation of atoms. The coefficients in a balanced chemical equation can be used to determine mole ratios in the reaction. The formula mass of a substance is the sum of the atomic masses of its atoms. The molar mass (gram-formula mass) of a substance equals one mole of that substance.

2 Aim: How do chemists calculate the mass of one mole of a substance?
Skills Objectives: Determine the empirical formula from a molecular formula. Determine the mass of a given number of moles of a substance. Determine the molecular formula, given the empirical formula and the molecular mass. Calculate the formula mass and gram-formula mass.
