English 9 Essential Questions Big Ideas
What moves us to communicate through digital and non-digital media? Why is it important for people and cultures to construct narratives about their experience? How is our understanding of culture and language constructed through and by language? How does language influence the way we think, act, and perceive the world? How can we use storytelling and texts to solve the world’s everyday problems? In a culture where we are bombarded with other people trying to define us, how do we make decisions for ourselves? How can literature and new media serve as a vehicle for social change? What are some strategies for building effective oral communication skills? Language and story can be a source of creativity and joy. Exploring stories and other texts helps us understand ourselves and make connections to others and to the world. People understand text differently depending on their worldviews and perspectives. Texts are socially, culturally, and historically constructed. Questioning what we hear, read, and view contributes to our ability to be educated and engaged citizens. “Words are sacred. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones, in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.” -TOM STOPPARD Explore the power of stories through reading, listening, and viewing. Develop writing, speaking, and representational skills as we create texts and make connections. Expand understanding and appreciation of language features, structures, and conventions.
