Physical activity, sedentary time, and fatness in a biethnic sample of young children
Dr Paul Collings British Heart Foundation Immediate Postdoctoral Basic Science Research Fellow
2
PA patterns in preschoolers Sporadic & challenging to measure
3
PA patterns in preschoolers There are many viable objective devices…
…but historically they have been seldom used in young children data are limited
4
Limited data… …particularly in non-white and deprived populations
5
Limited data… …particularly in non-white and deprived populations
Aim: to examine cross-sectional associations of physical activity with adiposity in young South Asian and White British children from a deprived setting
6
Methods Measures and analyses
LEAP 333 children (55% SA origin) of mean age 3y No ethnic difference in activity profiles 4.5 h/day sedentary; 4 h/day light activity; 50 m/day MVPA Outcomes: Multilevel models (repeated-measures participant study) adjusted for: IMD

Results Physical activity intensity & BMI
Fig 1. Associations between the cumulative awake time above vector magnitude intervals and body mass index. Statistical analyses performed using multilevel models adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, index of multiple deprivation, monitor worn time, and season of assessment. All results are scaled to represent associations per 20 min difference in exposures. Light PA ( cpm) corresponds to the light shaded region and MVPA (≥3908 cpm) to the dark shaded region.

Results Physical activity intensity & waist circumference
Fig 2. Associations between the cumulative awake time above vector magnitude intervals and waist circumference. Statistical analyses performed using multilevel models adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, index of multiple deprivation, monitor worn time, season of assessment, and height. All results are scaled to represent associations per 20 min difference in exposures. Light PA ( cpm) corresponds to the light shaded region and MVPA (≥3908 cpm) to the dark shaded region.

Results Physical activity intensity & sum of skinfolds
Fig 3. Associations between the cumulative awake time above vector magnitude intervals and sum of skinfolds.

Sit Stand Walk Run < < < Conclusion
Messages for policy and practice Inverse dose-dependent associations were found between physical activity and adiposity - first originating in the light activity region Physical activity guidelines grounded in dose-dependent relationships might be sensible and easily understood: any right-shift in the intensity distribution may be beneficial No evidence for effect modification by ethnicity suggests that physical activity is equally beneficial for adiposity levels in young South Asian and White British children Sit Stand Walk Run < < <
