Vocabulary

2. electromagnetic waves
A form of energy that includes visible light, ultraviolet light, and infared, x- rays, etc.; do not require a medium to travel.

3. absorption
Occurs when light waves transfer energy to particles of matter.

4. scattering
an interaction of light with matter that causes light to change direction. Light scatters in all directions.

5. TRANSMISSION
Occurs when light waves pass through an object without interacting.

6. REFRACTION
Occurs when light waves bend as they pass from one medium to another.

7. REFLECTION
Occurs when light waves bounce off of an object.

8. wavelength
the distance between two consecutive crests or compressions

9. radiation
the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves

10. infrared light
has longer wavelength and carry less energy than visible light waves.

11. ultraviolet light
wavelengths are shorter than those of visible light and carry more energy than visible light waves.

12. uv index
indicator of radiation exposure or exposure to UV rays

13. DIFFRACTION
Occurs when waves bend around a barrier.
