1. Get ready for our FIRST day of research!
Pick up your research folder and 5 note cards from the front. If you have not yet done so, pick up your typed WC page from the front and carefullly staple it to the back of your folder.
Label each of your WC entries with its parenthetical reference, or SLUG (see notes on the front board).
Turn on your computer and go to the project page:

2. What is the history of the people/ place?
Search for background information that will help your reader understand the people and place, The Central African Republic.
Where is CAR located? What surrounds it, and is this significant in any way?
Who has lived here historically, and what is their way of life?
What has the government/political situation been like historically in CAR?
DO NOT get into the history of the today’s problem yet…that is tomorrow’s question. Focus on the history of the place and people BEFORE the current issues in the country.

4. Get ready for today:
Pick up your research folder and 5 note cards from the front.

While we are waiting for everyone to get settled, review your folder and the comments on your envelopes, cards, and your Works Cited.

5. Watch out!
Not enough information and/or unfinished work—note that some of your cards may have moved if they were placed with the incorrect research question. I have also placed them in order within each envelope.
Question Focus—Make sure the details you provide answer the question focus for the day! You must have at least 4-5 notecards related to each research question before you can write you paper.
Gaps in information—envision how you will use these researched details to write your paper. For example, if you have a fact from 1894, but your next fact is 1997, then you are definitely missing something!
Must have mix of quotes and paraphrases/summaries!
Missing or mismatched Slugs—on the WC page on the back of your folder should match the slug on each card from the source—this will help you with parenthetical references when you write your paper.
Incorrect or missing WC entries—these must be correct! Proof your work using the many examples provided in class and the WC poster featuring capitalization and punctuation expectations!!! ABC order is a MUST! If you are still confused, see my example.

6. How are the people of CAR being affected by the problem TODAY
How are the people of CAR being affected by the problem TODAY? Why is this problem important within CAR?
Use your most current information about how the problem in CAR is impacting people’s lives TODAY. Be sure to include the reasons that this problem is important to the people living through this crisis.
What problems are the population of CAR facing? Why?
How is this problem affecting people’s lives TODAY?
Use your most current facts and statistics about how peoples lives are in jeopardy due to the violence in CAR.
Focus on the PRESENT—the NOW.

7. Why should the world care about CAR
Why should the world care about CAR? What are the consequences of this crisis?
How is this crisis affecting the interests of other nations? Think of economic and security concerns.
What are the consequences of the refugee situation in surrounding countries? What about people who are internally displaced from their homes due to the fighting?
What humanitarian concerns arise from the threat of wide-spread genocide in CAR? What signs are present that this is where the conflict might be heading? (Think of our Holocaust study!)

8. What HAS/SHOULD BE done to fix the problem in CAR?
What has already been done by NGOs and the United Nations (UN)?
What should continue that is already in progress?
What do experts and organizations working in the region believe will help end the violence and instability, or at the very least encourage the violence to stop in the future.
Focus on what has been done already and what should be done in the future to help.

9. Checking the Research Folder
On the BACK of your folder:
Cross out any articles you didn’t use at all.
You should still have 5 sources used and cited properly!
In your research question envelopes:
Each envelope should have AT LEAST 4-5 note cards that help to answer the question. Information should not be repeated.
MORE is better!!!
On your research cards:
Source slug on each card indicating which article the information came from—this should match your WC page!
“…” around direct quotes (recorded using the same words as the source)
Mixture of quotes and paraphrases/summaries

10. Last Steps Make corrections as needed
Put your cards in the order in which you will use them within each envelope.
Add more or note the “So what?!?” of each piece of information.
Find an interesting quote or fact for your lead-in (attention getter for the beginning of your essay) and record it in the blank spot on your folder.
If you have used all of my sources, and you want to search for more, today is the day! Be sure to properly cite any new sources and record notes using the methods we have practiced in class.
When your research folder is completely complete, turn it in and begin on IR reading and the reading log 
