5 Four kinds of elections
1. Primary elections: voters select party nominees 2. General elections: contested between nominees of each party 3. Elections on specific policy questions for legislation—recently become more common in some states

6 4. Midterm Election: a Congressional election that takes place halfway through the president’s term in office

7 Legislative Referendum: a special election in which the legislature refers a measure to the voters for their approval

8 Popular Referendum: a special election in which voters can vote to approve or repeal the laws passed by the legislature

9 Initiative: a method by which citizens propose a constitutional law or amendment

10 Voter Qualifications Constitution does note give the Federal Government the power to set suffrage qualifications (left to the states) but does put four restrictions on how states use that power: 15th Amendment: RACE 19th Amendment: GENDER 24th Amendment: MONEY 26th Amendment: AGE

Citizenship Residence Age Registration DENIED…. mental institutions (50 states), felonies (KY/VA)

12 Cross – pressured voter : a voter who is caught between conflicting elements in his or her identity
