A GUIDED TOUR OF DIGITAL RESOURCES IN THE ENGLISH II CLASSROOM

NO FOOD OR DRINKS – EVER! DO NOT MOVE KEYBOARDS OR MOUSE (or the cords/USB) DO NOT ROLL AROUND THE ROOM IN YOUR CHAIR (5 FT DISTANCE ALLOWED ONLY) DO NOT LOG SOMEONE OFF WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM THE TEACHER LEAVE THE LAB CLEAN – flash drives, paper, etc. COMPUTER LAB PRIVILEGES CAN BE LOST

5 Your “H” Drive Click on “START” in bottom left corner of screen
Choose “My Computer” right hand column, 5th down Find your name under “Networks” the last category Open your H drive by double clicking Find “Files and Folders” left side, 1st dialogue box Click on “Make a New Folder” 1st option A folder will automatically pop up in your H drive Type ENGLISH Il on highlighted folder name When you save items for English, make sure to choose your English folder. This will help keep your class documents separate. Make sure to name each document a clear name such as “Expo essay 1st draft.”

Click on the Gaggle logo to enter the website Click on Costumer Login upper right hand corner Student login – Password – previously set (2012) Can’t log in? Ask for help. Find the Digital Locker left side under Applications, the 3rd tab down, scroll to find icon The fastest and LEGAL system for ing documents to and from school. A flash drive that you can’t lose! Click on the Turnitin logo to enter the website Go to your teacher’s website for a full instruction page on how to create a profile, submit a paper, etc. if you have never used Turnitin.com If you do have a profile, login. Can’t remember your information? I don’t have access to that and neither does your Eng I teacher. Request a password change. If you used an other than Gaggle, you’ll have to wait until you get home to take care of that issue. Go to the “Add a Class” option - add your current English II class as your new English class You must have your Class ID and password to do this Ask your teacher if you can’t add the class.

8 Saving your MLA template
Open Microsoft Word Not on your desktop? Right click on Desktop Click “New” Choose Microsoft Word Document Double click on Microsoft Word icon Create a “New Document” Need help? Ask! Save as Word Template File Name: “MLA formatting template” Save as Type: Word Template Open H drive Open English II folder Click “Save” – This will enable you to use the same document for each essay that you write. You will save as a new Word Document in your English II folder for each essay typed.

With your MLA formatting template open Margins Click on the “Page Layout” tab Slide down to “Margins” and click Make sure that “Normal” 1 inch is highlighted Font Click on “Home” Select “Times New Roman,” 12 pt. font ONLY Black ink only Save your formatting changes after each step! Make sure to maintain the same file name and type.

Spacing Right click on your document Choose “Paragraph” Find “Spacing” Make sure it is 0 pt for BEFORE and AFTER Find “Line Spacing” Choose “Double” – this should automatically change the box to the right to a blank space. e. Click “OK” Save your formatting changes after each step! Make sure to maintain the same file name and type.

Header place cursor in header area Click on the “Insert” tab at the top Go to the right to find “Header” 5th box Click on “Header” Choose the 1st option “Blank” Your toolbar will now have a new tab called “Header & Footer Tools” Choose “Page Number” the far left, 3rd option in Choose “Top of Page” Choose “Plain Number 3” 3rd option down Type your last name on your document in front of the page number – make sure to change the font of your name and number to Times New Roman, 12 pt. – Ask for help! j. Close Header and Footer large red X on top right

5. Heading place cursor in the actual document, not Header area Type your name make sure it is in Times New Roman, 12 pt. When you hit enter, your line should automatically double space. If not, you didn’t create your MLA template correctly. Ask for help in double spacing your document. Type “Steplock – 1st Period” hit enter Type the current date – 5 October hit enter Align your cursor to the center using the formatting buttons – ask for help Hit enter – if it is still centered, make sure to un-center before saving your template for its final draft Save your formatting changes after each step! Make sure to maintain the same file name and type.

13 Typing the Expository Essay
Open your “MLA formatting template” document Name the file “Expository Essay Rough Draft” Save type as “Word Document” This will allow you to take it home and use the document on an older version of Word without losing formatting. Create an interesting title for your essay hit enter Hit “Tab” once as an indention Begin typing your essay as you have written thus far Save often! Make sure to maintain the same file name and type.

14 Submitting to Turnitin.com
Log in to Turnitin.com Find your English class Find the Expository Essay assignment Due date – October 8, 4pm This is the only one you can submit to. DOWNLOAD YOUR ESSAY Make sure to hit every optional submit button until you receive a notification that says you have successfully submitted your essay. You will receive an stating you have successfully submitted your essay. DO NOT DELETE THIS .
