2 Era of Good Feelings Nationalism spread across the country as a result of the War of 1812 One political party existed (Democratic-Republicans) – Federalist died as a result of the War of 1812

3 Missouri Compromise 22 states (11 free and 11 slave)
Issue? As new states are added, will they be free or slave? What is the importance of keeping it equal? Henry Clay – creates a solution when Missouri wants to enter as a slave state (becomes known as the “Great Compromiser”)

Requires Maryland going upstream Federalism says that everything flows downstream – Federal => State => Local Chief Justice John Marshall promotes Federalism by saying that Maryland cannot tax the bank (federal)

13 Adams-Onis Treaty (1819) In addition to the U.S. getting Florida, the treaty established a rigid boundary between land acquired with Louisiana Purchase and Spanish Territory
