How the Core Causes Mantle Convection & Plate Tectonics
TEACHER NOTES below
Materials per student- sheet of blank copy paper, yellow, orange, and brown butcher block paper, scissors, *glue, *2 circular objects to trace (1 larger than the other; I used a plastic bowl and a cup)
*these are objects students can share, so you won’t need as many. Also, to help things move along quicker with the butcher block paper, I had a station for each color, with multiple pieces of each there, along with what students needed to trace and cut.
Procedure-
Have each student trace and cut a small yellow and a larger orange circle, and several small brown pieces (of different sizes and thicknesses). Show them yours, and demonstrate exactly what they are to do.
Have them write the notes on the yellow and orange as shown on the ppt. (Don’t glue yet!! It’ll be too wet to write. By the way, change/add the text on the ppt as much as you like to fit your needs.)
Lay the yellow and orange circles on the left side of the paper as shown (longways), lay some brown pieces (dry) for now, and add point 3. notes to the right about the effects.
Very cool demo your students, or at least you, can do that shows convection-
