3 How do you find slope of a line using the rise over run ratio?
Essential Question: How do you find slope of a line using the rise over run ratio?

4 Activate: y2 – y1 / x2 – x1

5 Brain POP!: Slope

6 8.3 Vocabulary Review: Slope (Rise over Run) = Change in y divided by change in x. y1 –y2 x1 – x2

7 8.3 Vocabulary Types of slopes: Positive slope: the line rises from left to right or the change is positive. ¼ Negative slope: the line falls from left to right or the change in either y or x is negative – ¼ Zero slope: the line is horizontal. 0/4 Undefined slope: the line is vertical. 5/0

9 Identify the slope:

10 Identify the slope: Positive Zero Negative Undefined

11

12 Finding slope from a line
Count the number of spaces up or down. Put that number as your numerator. (it is + if you went up, it is – if you went down) Count the number of spaces over. Put that number as your denominator. (it is + if you went right, it is – if you went left) Simplify your fraction if possible.

13 Find the slope:

20 Finding slope using the change of the y and x.
To find slope you can subtract one y value from another. Then subtract the x values. (be sure to subtract in the same order as you did the y values) Divide your change in y by the change in x.

21 8.3 Vocabulary Review: Slope (Rise over Run) = Change in y divided by change in x. y1 –y2 x1 – x2

23 Slope using change in y divided by change in x
Find two different points on the line. Identify their ordered pairs. Subtract the y’s and x’s from each other. Divide your y value by the x value. (or at least write as a fraction)
