What is Psychology? Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. It is a relatively new science, with most advances having occurred over the past 150 years. Origins can be traced back to Greece, between years BC with an original emphasis on philosophy.

Things you know psychology is used for:
Clinical Treats mental illness Developmental Looks at how thinking, feeling, and behavior change throughout a lifetime (and even before) Personality Why are people the way they are? Social How do we interact with others? Cognitive How do we think? Biological How does the nervous system affect behavior and vice versa.

Things you probably don’t know psychology is used for:
Consumer studies Community psychology Cultural Psychology Health Education Environment Sports

How does this affect Hitler?
Hitler is a HUGE topic of discussion in several disciplines of psychology. Why? The man was obviously crazy…so why did people follow him, believe him, etc.

So what are you doing today?
HOPEFULLY you did the reading that was assigned over the weekend. You will be split into groups based on a major discipline of psychology. You will take that specific discipline and apply it to readings on Hitler. You will then take that information and present why your discipline explains why Hitler was able to rule the way he did to the class.
