1 15.1 Energy Conversion and Conservation
Chapter 15 15.1 Energy Conversion and Conservation

2 Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can be converted from one form to another but not created or destroyed.

3 Energy Conversion Energy conversion is the process of changing energy from one form to another.

4 Lighting a Match Chemical energy in your body moves your hand.
This produces kinetic energy. Friction of the moving match causes it to strike. This is thermal energy.

5 Energy Conversions The gravitational potential energy (GPE) of an object is converted to the kinetic energy (KE) of motion as the object falls.

6 Energy Conversion Calculations
Mechanical energy = kinetic energy + potential energy Mechanical energy = KE + PE

7 Conservation of Mechanical Energy
(KE + PE) beginning = (KE + PE) end

8 Energy and Mass Einstein’s equation (E = mc2) says that energy and mass are equivalent and can be converted into each other.

9 Energy and Mass That means that : Energy is released as matter is destroyed, and matter can be created from energy.
