29.1 Introduction German Secret Police dressed up like Polish soldiers and staged a fake killing of German officers This was a way that they made an excuse to invade Poland

29.2 U.S. Gets Involved America Helps Out:
The US decides to join the war and fight the Axis Powers Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor: US cut off oil to Japan and that got them mad Japan sent bombers to Pearl Harbor and they bombed the base there 2 Hours the Japanese killed 2,400 soldiers America declared war on Japan Axis Powers declared war on the US

29.3 The War in Europe US joined with the Soviet Union and Britain and 48 other countries to fight Japan and Germany Axis Powers (German, Japan and Italy) North Africa and Italy: US and its allies attacked Germans in the North African deserts and drove them out They then went to Italy and attacked and won but German soldiers remained and continued to fight. 2 years later Germans left Italy The Battle of Stalingrad: German armies came in and destroyed the city In the winter the S.U. surrounded the German armies and forced them to surrender This was the turning point of the war and Russia went into Germany to fight

D-Day (Invasion Day): The day that the allied forces invaded German territory This was the largest land-sea-air invasion in history They landed on the beaches of Normandy where they were meet by heavy fire The allies took the beach German Concentration Camps: Hitler put Jews, Poles and Gypsies in concentration camps They had little food and many were thrown into furnaces to die This ordeal was named the Holocaust: The mass murder of European Jews and other victims by the Nazis 11 million people were killed in the Holocaust V-E Day (Victory in Europe Day): Hitler knew he lost and committed suicide instead of being captured Germany surrendered War was over but there was still a Pacific War going on

29.4 The War in the Pacific When the US went to fight Japan their territory was about 1/7 of the size of the Earth The Battle of Midway: Japan again went to attack Hawaii US fought them and that was the last time that they went to attack US soil Island Hopping: US started taking islands in the Pacific one at a time from Japan Used them as bases to attack Japanese ships Hard battles because Japanese would rather die then give up

Okinawa, the Final Stepping Stone:
US needed to take Okinawa island to win the war Japanese pilot know as kamikazes flew their planes with explosives into US ships These attacks killed many but the US took the island The Atomic Bomb: Scientist created a new weapon that would be the most “terrible” weapon created Truman is now president because Roosevelt died of a stroke V-J Day (Victory in Japan Day): US dropped two Atomic Bombs killing 170,000 people instantly Japan surrendered

29.5 American Servicemen Becoming a GI:
Civilians trained to be soldiers and were given the title “Government Issue” They trained for a long time and only ½ went to battles Life in Combat: They had little food and fought around the clock Many died They fought hard because they were motivated by Patriotism

29.6 Wartime Government Increasing Production:
During the war everything switched to military driven Factories produced tanks, airplanes and guns Americans worked together to ensure that they won this war Supporting the War Effort: US citizens purchased war bonds that lent their money to the US for the war and they would be repaid later

29.7 Wartime Consumers Price Controls and Rationing:
US rationed amounts of food and other products to assure that the soldiers had enough New jobs were created and gave people more money Victory Gardens and Pocketless Pants: Americans started growing gardens for food Americans could not buy metal objects and some clothes were limited Americans were not upset about the rations and changes

29.8 Women at War Women on the Job:
When men were at war the women took over ALL the jobs They worked them until after the war when most were fired to be replaced by men Women in the Military: Women were in the war but no in battles as soldiers They played roles behind the scenes

29.9 Japanese Americans Internment Camps:
Japanese Americans were forced from their homes into Internment Camps because US was afraid that they might be spies for Japan Overcoming Injustice: Many Japanese Americans fought in the war In 1988 President George Bush sent a check for 20 thousand dollars and an apology letter to all that were forced into a camp during WWII

29.10 African Americans When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Dorie Miller grabbed a machine gun and took down 4 planes and was looked at as a hero African American Servicemen: AA where allowed to fight next to whites and they fought hard for the country Some were still in segregated units Progress at Home: During the war the US forced businesses to hire AA This helped then gain respect and money

29.11 Mexican Americans Mexican American Servicemen:
They fought with whites but were discriminated against Braceros and Zoot Suits: At home Mexicans were hired to work on farms Mexicans were also seen as gangsters because of their clothes and many were arrested, beat up or killed because of it

29.12 Jewish Americans Jewish Refugees:
US did not help Jews in Europe at the start of the war They then created the War Refugee Board and saved 200,000 Jews from the Nazis Jewish American Servicemen: They fought against Hitler not just for America but for their people
