1 29 October 2014 Do now: We are 6 days away from a national mid-term election (non-Presidential election year). Write a min of 3 lines on ONE of the following questions: Why do we have the secret ballot in the United States? (meaning you don’t have tell ppl who you vote for) How could announcing who you are voting for be problematic? Today, I will understand how the Navigation Acts benefited both the colonies and England; how triangular trade exacerbated slave trade, and the rights enjoyed by the colonists. Grading period ends today, colonial quiz and pamphlets must be completed and turned in to me.

2 You will work with your reading partner…
To read aloud and answer the guided reading questions that you should have picked up upon entering class. This is expected to be fully and accurately completed by the end of class. Off-task behaviors will not be tolerated!!!!!!!

3 Mercantilism Mercantilism and Triangular Trade (take notes)
What is the theory behind mercantilism? What are “raw materials?” How does it benefit the “mother or colonizing country? How could mercantilism lead to resentment?

4 Navigation Acts Benefited England Benefited the colonies
Ensured its control over colonial shipping Certain products could be shipped only to England Created jobs for English workers Benefited the colonies Led colonists to build ships (trade and defense) Protected colonial merchants from foreign competition (darn French, Spanish, and Dutch)

5 Triangular Trade Impact: Increase in slave trade (slaves treated as chattel = property) Further destabilization of Africa. Increased colonial dependency on England which led to hostility.

6 Colonial Government King (selected by God or via war)
Colonial proprietor (given land by the king, could also appoint governor if the monarch didn’t) Governor (serves as the king’s henchman) Upper House (Advisers to the governor) Lower House (selected to protect the interests of the citizens) Citizens (generally, white, male, land owners)

7 James II (remember the Duke of York)
For a period of about 4 years, James II consolidated the New England Colonies and placed them all under royal control, meaning he revoked their charters and authority to governor autonomously (independently). The “Glorious Revolution” resulted in an increase in rights (rights of the accused, trial by jury, ruler couldn’t raise taxes without the approval of Parliament).
